Station 04

Gravity separation

Gravity separation

Kernels that pass the screen but won't emerge in the field

Only density catches the right-sized but hollow kernel.

A screen measures size, not weight. A hollow, insect-damaged or weak-embryo kernel can be the same size as a sound one — it passes the screen, goes into the bag and never emerges in the field. The gravity table separates kernels by density on a vibrating deck riding an air cushion.

Gravity separation is the station that directly lifts germination: once the low-density fraction is removed, the viability of the remaining batch rises measurably.

The separated fraction is weighed and reported too; on request it is delivered separately to the feed industry. No fraction quietly disappears.

Measured at inlet

  • Test weight / density profile — table tilt and airflow are set accordingly
  • Sample viability check — calibration of the separation threshold

Delivered at outlet

  • Density band — low-density fraction leaves the line
  • Fraction record — separated quantity is weighed and reported
